About the course

This course aims to provide you with basic practical skills that can be immediately applied to enhance your massage sessions and expand your current skill set.

Throughout the course, you will learn several Tui Na massage techniques rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory. These techniques can be easily integrated into your existing practice, regardless of your background. The course is designed to accommodate individuals from various disciplines and interests.

During these sessions, you will:

  • Develop a foundational understanding of basic Chinese Medicine principles, allowing you to comprehend and apply TCM concepts such as excess and deficiency.
  • Through tactile exploration, you will learn to feel the physiological aspects under your fingertips.
  • Gain insights into the nature of pain and discover how Tui Na can be effectively employed to address pain-related conditions.
  • Explore the movement patterns of different types of qi (energy) in the body and learn specific massage techniques that support and harmonise these energetic flows.
  • Receive detailed instruction and hands-on practice in 15 Traditional Tui Na hand movements.
  • Learn a simple yet highly effective Tui Na protocol called the Wei Ke method, designed to alleviate pain and promote overall well-being (if time permits).
  • Discover the Japanese art of rice grain moxa and its application to specific acupressure points.
  • Engage in opportune moments for questions and answers, ensuring a deeper understanding of the material and clarification of any doubts.

Martine Niven

Martine has over 15 years of experience as an acupuncture practitioner, having undergone her four-year training at The College of Integrated Chinese Medicine (CICM) in Reading and graduating in 2008. She has a BSc Hons degree in Acupuncture and specialises in the integrated styles of both Five Element and TCM Acupuncture. Martine also holds a diploma in Tui Na (Traditional Chinese Medical Massage) and has completed a diploma in Paediatric Acupuncture specialising in the treatment of infants, children, and adolescents. This was a year-long diploma course taught by renowned practitioners Julian and Teresa Scott and Dr Stephen Gascoigne. Click here for more on Children’s Treatments.
Recently, she has also qualified in Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine after completing her three-year training at White Crane Academy in London, under the guidance of Andrew Flowers.

In addition to her expertise in acupuncture and herbal medicine, Martine is also trained as a Reiki Master and Aromatherapist. She creates all of her own in-house herbal remedies using aromatherapy and homegrown herbs. She is ITEC trained and proficient in a variety of other holistic therapies, including Holistic Massage, Indian Head Massage, and Hopi Ear Candling. Martine is a 35th Generation Shaolin Warrior Disciple and a lifelong practitioner of Traditional Chinese Martial Arts. She specialises in Shaolin Kung Fu, Sanda, Qi Gong, and meditation (see her martial arts profile here).

She teaches classes in Qi Gong, Meditation, and Shaolin Kung Fu and helped set up UK Shaolin in Southampton. She is also the event manager for Chinese New Year in Southampton City and runs and teaches at her own martial arts school UK SHAOLIN Bournemouth.

Martine believes in providing the best quality of care for her patients, and for this reason, she is a registered member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) and The Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine(RCHM). She adheres to both their standards of care and strict codes of conduct and practice.
